Student Assistant in Research Data Management Methods and Workflows (1 year) 20 - 40 %

The University of Zurich (UZH) plays a prominent role in Open and Reproducible Science, both nationally and internationally. With the Center of Reproducible Science and Research Synthesis (CRS), UZH pursues the goal to improve the overall reproducibility of empirical research and to promote original research in meta-science. As an important part of CRS activities, we provide research data management (RDM) expertise in scientific collaborations and research synthesis projects.
Your responsibilities
The successful candidate will support the activities of the main data specialist at the CRS in a range of projects related to data management and computational reproducibility. In particular, they will
- Contribute to hands-on support and practical training to help researchers align their outputs with FAIR data management principles.
- Develop simple code and documentation to assist on specific tasks such as data harmonization, metadata generation, file hashing to support data integrity, monitoring relational databases, etc.
- Help develop reproducible dashboards (e.g., in Quarto) with clear documentation so that researchers can sustain them
- Create reproducible and interactive training materials and demos using Markdown and Quarto or Python Notebooks in Git repositories
- Assist in the organization of workshops (e.g., Datathons) and training events
- Gain knowledge in evolving data ontologies and standards (e.g., RDF and linked data) and research infrastructures; disseminate this knowledge within the team
Your profile
The candidate should have a strong interest in improving the quality of science through good data management, and consider a career as a data specialist. Specifically, the candidate should have
- A Bachelor's degree in a discipline involving technical and quantitative expertise
- Advanced computational skills; Python or R and Git are essential
- Hands-on experience with relational databases and data table manipulation
- Excellent knowledge of English and good communication skills
- Capacity to write clear documentation and to communicate technical information for non-technical audiences
- Flexibility and adaptability to understand researchers with varying levels of IT affinity
- Ability to work in a small team
- Experience conducting and/or supporting academic research is a plus
