The Geosciences Center of the University of Göttingen is a leading scientific institution with an excellent reputation in geoscientific research. We offer state-of-the-art experimental (Piston cylinder, IHPV, CSPV, gas mixing furnaces) and analytical equipment (SEM, EPMA, Raman, FT-IR, etc.), as well as an inspiring environment for the development of innovative research projects and the training of young scientists. To strengthen our Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, we are looking for a junior scientist (m/f/d) to develop their own research and teaching portfolio, ideally in addition to the existing research foci petrochronology, early earth and/or fluid-rock-interaction. Your tasks:

  • Research in the field of metamorphic and experimental petrology
  • Carrying out high-pressure, high-temperature experiments such as CSPV, IHPV, piston cylinders and gas mixing furnaces
  • Preparation of natural and experimental samples for analysis
  • Analysis and evaluation of natural and experimental samples using scanning electron microscopy, electron beam microprobe, Raman spectroscopy
  • 4 SWS teaching per semester, especially in the field of polarization microscopy and metamorphic petrology, co-supervision of student projects

Your profile:

  • Completed academic degree (Master/Diploma) in petrology, geochemistry or mineralogy 
  • PhD in geosciences (preferably in the field of metamorphic petrology, geochemistry or mineralogy)
  • Expertise in the fields of petrochronology, early earth, thermodynamics and reaction kinetics
  • Experienced in thermodynamic modeling and software packages (PerpleX, Theriak-Domino)
  • Ability to independently operate SEM and EPMA instruments
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs for data analysis and presentation
  • High motivation for teaching in the BSc and MSc area of the faculty and willingness to further develop the content and structure of the department's teaching program
  • Communicative appearance as well as careful and reliable way of working
  • Knowledge of the English language (B2 level)

The position is intended to serve the qualification of junior researchers and offers the opportunity to build up a research and teaching portfolio including the opportunity for habilitation.
