Start of employment July 1, or by agreement, temporary

The Jacobs Center for Productive Youth Development is a scientific center at the University of Zurich focused on youth development. The Center is a joint venture between the University of Zurich and the Jacobs Foundation. How do children reach their full potential? This is the central question that guides our work. We are dedicated to interdisciplinary, collaborative, developmental research that is relevant for our society and will ultimately improve the lives of young people. Our researchers come from the fields of economics, psychology, and sociology.

Your responsibilities

We invite applications for the position of a pre-doctoral fellow in Economics of Child and Youth Development at the Jacobs Center and the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich. The pre-doctoral fellow will work on projects in the field of economics of child and youth development under the supervision of Ana Costa-Ramón and Ulf Zölitz. Currently, ongoing projects are in labor economics, especially education, gender and health economics. Projects study education policy, peer effects, child health and development, gender inequality, as well as the causes and consequences of early childhood investments.

This position offers a range of on-the-job learning opportunities and mentoring from faculty supervisors in an inspiring and interdisciplinary academic environment. The predoctoral fellow will join a dynamic team of international researchers.

The pre-doctoral position is a full-time commitment, combines research work with learning activities, and is ideal for a recent graduate interested in doing a Ph.D. in Economics. The position offers the possibility to acquire many skills necessary to conduct independent research in applied microeconomics.

The pre-doc fellow will work on different projects that may involve data collection through surveys, the analysis of large-scale register data, analysis of experimental data, and involvement in the design and execution of field experiments. We expect to involve the candidate in all stages of research – brainstorming, literature reviews, data analysis in Stata, data processing, data visualization, and writing.
The successful candidate will contribute centrally to the data work of the projects.

The appointment will be for one year and may be extended by one additional year. The annual salary is competitive.

Your profile

The candidate must possess (at the time of starting) a Master's or Bachelor's degree with excellent grades in Economics or another quantitative field, as well as good knowledge of Stata.

We are looking for a person who enjoys independent problem-solving and thrives on taking high-level directional advice and then running with this advice as far as possible. The ideal candidate has a desire to understand the social world around them and possesses a thirst for answering research questions about how the social environment affects individuals.

Information on your application

Applications include a cover letter, a CV, a transcript of grades, one letter of recommendation, and a writing sample (optional). Writing samples are optional and can, for example, be a research paper, a bachelor or master thesis. The letter of recommendation should be sent directly by your reference via email to: valery.sailly@jacobscenter.uzh.ch. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview. We will start reviewing the applications immediately.
