Postdoctoral Position in Electrochemical Engineering 

The Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich is inviting applications for two postdoctoral positions: one in electrochemical energy storage and another one in energy conversion. Our recently renovated labs are located in the Zentrum campus and offer well-equipped electrochemistry and wet chemistry laboratory space. For in-situ studies, we have differential electrochemical mass-spectrometry, GC, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring EQCM-D, and in-situ FTIR/Raman.

Project background

Our research program addresses critical energy and sustainability challenges by developing next-generation battery technologies and CO2 capture/utilization methods. Our research group designs: (1) new energy materials and (2) electrochemical processes by precisely controlling the chemical environment at the solid-electrolyte interface. This involves molecular engineering of electrolytes and interfaces to achieve fast, stable, and efficient electrochemical energy storage and conversion. To unlock these advancements, a significant emphasis is placed on mechanistic studies and the utilization of advanced characterization techniques, including in situ X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) techniques, to probe electrolytes and the solid-electrolyte interface.

Job description

We are now looking for two postdoctoral candidate who can support our group activities in the respective research areas of electrochemical energy storage and conversion and/or light-driven CO2 capture.

Your profile

We seek highly motivated researchers with a strong foundational knowledge in electrochemistry and/or photochemistry and a passion for contributing to solutions in the global energy landscape. If you thrive in collaborative environments and possess expertise in one or more of the following areas, we encourage your application:

  • Battery Technology and Electrocatalysis: A proven background in battery research, electrocatalysis, or general electrochemistry is highly desirable.
  • Molecular Design and Characterization: We welcome applicants with experience in organic synthesis, photochemistry, or the application of advanced characterization techniques (synchrotron facilities, in-situ methods) to understand energy systems at the molecular level.
  • Computational Modeling (Advantageous): Proficiency in molecular simulations (DFT and MD) applied to energy systems is a significant advantage.

Your Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Material Science, or a related field
  • Expertise in analyzing electrochemical interfaces using in-situ spectroscopy or synchrotron facilities (a plus)
  • Programming language proficiency (a plus)
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Self-driven, highly motivated with excellent teamwork skills
