PhD or Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Multimodal Medical Image Analysis for Musculoskeletal Medicine

This position is hosted within the AI in Orthopaedics group, affiliated with the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Orthopaedics and the Institute for AI and Informatics in Medicine, both at TUM and the TUM University Hospital (Klinikum rechts der Isar). We develop and translate advanced machine learning for 3D/multimodal medical imaging in musculoskeletal medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply advanced AI methods for multimodal and 3D medical image analysis (Xray, MRI, CT).
  • Integrate robotic data, biomechanical measurements, and clinical information with imaging data.
  • Explore and implement Generative AI approaches (e.g., data augmentation, reconstruction, simulation).
  • Investigate and apply Vision-Language models for linking imaging with clinical text and decision support.
  • Evaluate algorithms regarding robustness, explainability, and clinical impact in musculoskeletal medicine.
  • Collaborate in an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, engineers, and computer scientists, and contribute to publications and conference presentations.

Profile

  • PhD track: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, or related field
  • PostDoc track: PhD in a relevant discipline with a record in medical image analysis / ML
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow; image processing frameworks)
  • Background in deep learning / computer vision / biomedical image computing
  • Excellent English; German is an advantage for clinical collaboration
