In the Department of Islamic Studies at the Seminar for Languages and Cultures of the Near East (SSKVO) at the University of Heidelberg, positions are available as soon as possible

 

PhD Positions in Languages 

to occupy.

 

The positions are in the context of the international working group “Caricatures and Cartoons in a Global Perspective” ( https://caricatures.hypotheses.org/ ) and serve to further academic qualifications, in particular doctorates in the field of near-image satire.

 

Your tasks:

  • Essential tasks include participating in the development of a source database of Middle Eastern cartoons with a focus on the first half of the 20th century and participation in the methodological and theoretical discussion within the working group, which aims to develop transdisciplinary analytical methods. Another essential part of the positions is a doctorate within the subject area, with one position relating to the arabophone and one relating to the persophone space being awarded. The tasks ultimately include a teaching obligation of 2 semester hours per week.

Your profile:

  • Above-average degree (Master) in Islamic studies, Arabic studies, Middle Eastern studies or history with a particular interest in working with multigraphic sources (caricatures, cartoons, visual satires in magazines or other media) and in interdisciplinary collaboration. Students who will complete their MA degree in 2024 are also eligible.
  • Very good reading skills in Arabic (position 1) or Persian (position 2). For the Arabic-speaking area, knowledge of dialectal forms of language is an advantage; Knowledge of other languages in the region is an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel on business, especially for source research/archive work

Remuneration is carried out in accordance with E 13 TV-L. The positions are limited to three years and will be filled as soon as possible.

The Section of Islamic Studies/Middle Eastern History at the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near East, Heidelberg University, is inviting applications for

 

two PhD-positions (50%)

 

to be filled at the earliest possible date.

 

The positions stand in the context of the international Working group „Caricatures and Cartoons in a Global Perspective“ (https://caricatures.hypotheses.org/) and are designed for young researchers wanting to start their own PhD project in the field of Middle Eastern pictorial satire.

 

Important tasks include contributing to the development of a source database of Middle Eastern caricatures with a focus on the first half of the 20th century and participating in the methodological and theoretical discussion within the working group, which aims to develop transdisciplinary applicable methods of analysis. A further essential part of the positions is a doctorate within the thematic field, whereby one position is related to the Arabophone area and the other to the Persophone area. The duties also include a teaching obligation of two semester periods per week.

 

Requirement profile:

  • Above-average degree (Master′s) in Islamic Studies, Arabic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies or History with special interest in working with multigraphic sources (caricatures, cartoons, pictorial satires in journals or other media) and in interdisciplinary collaboration. MA-Students graduating during 2024 are also eligible.
  • Very good reading knowledge of Arabic (position 1) or Persian (position 2). For the Arabic language region, knowledge of dialectal language forms is advantageous; knowledge of other languages of the region is of advantage.
  • Willingness to travel, especially for source research/archival work

 

The positions are paid according to E 13 TV-L. The positions are limited to three years and will be filled as soon as possible.
