Start: January 2026
Department: Forensic Toxicology and Chemistry (FTC), led by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Weinmann
Program: Graduate School of Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (3-year PhD program)
The project focuses on the investigation of a novel potential alcohol biomarker, EtoChoP (ethylated phosphorylcholine). Research will cover its formation, detection in body fluids and hair, stability, elimination, specificity, and selectivity, forming the basis of a doctoral dissertation.
Develop and validate detection methods using LC-MS/MS and QToF-MS/MS
Analyze EtoChoP in samples from alcohol consumption studies and withdrawal therapies
Study enzymatic formation of EtoChoP via lipases
Supervise 2–3 Master’s students in related research projects
Participate in departmental forensic-toxicology projects
Prepare a cumulative dissertation
Publish research findings and present at national and international conferences
Optional involvement in routine forensic-toxicology tasks (≤10% of workload)
Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, or related field
Interest in collaboration with medical departments (e.g., Inselspital)
Strong English skills for publications and presentations
Willingness to participate in routine forensic-toxicology activities
PhD training within a structured Graduate School program
Professional development in core competencies and toxicology
Work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team in a modern laboratory
