We are offering a
PhD Position in Counterfactual Reasoning: Novel Machine Learning Methods for Material Discovery (HDS-LEE graduate school)
Do you want to make an impact by connecting high-throughput cell microscopy with machine learning for 3D image reconstruction? Then thiis is the position for you! Recent developments in Explainable AI (XAI) adopt counterfactual reasoning to explain predictions of machine learning models. Their principle is to develop explanations similar to known inputs, but with different predictive outcome. For material discovery, we suggest extending this methodology to address the question: “What is the smallest, actionable change needed to transform material A into a version with property B?” In this HDS-LEE project, we will create new methods for counterfactual discovery of materials, creating immediate impact via new candidate materials, new software tools, and more long-term impact through a new methodology for the discovery of materials. We will advance the state-of-the-art in counterfactual methods beyond explanations, with new concepts and algorithms for the search in complex spaces where limited human curated data is available.

Your Job:
The Helmholtz School for Data Science in Life, Earth and Energy (HDS-LEE) provides an interdisciplinary environment for educating the next generation of data scientists in close contact to domain-specific knowledge and research. All three domains – life & medical sciences, earth sciences, and energy systems/materials – are characterized by the generation of huge heterogeneously structured data sets, which have to be evaluated in order to obtain a holistic understanding of very complex systems.
