PhD Position in Biology

The Livestock Genetics Group at the Institute of Genetics of the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern (Cord Drögemüller) in collaboration with the Interfaculty Bioinformatics Unit (IBU) of the University of Bern (Rémy Bruggmann) offers a PhD position in the course of Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) of the University of Bern on a topic in evolutionary genetics funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). For more information on our team and research, please visit our websites.

Candidates must have a university degree in bioinformatics, biology or biomedical sciences, including veterinary medicine. An affinity for computational work and experience of data analysis is an advantage.

The PhD project also includes time for training and courses to improve knowledge in computational biology and bioinformatics. You will be responsible for full bioinformatic analysis of WGS data, structural variant discovery, targeted genotyping, genotype-phenotype associations, and possible functional transcriptomic experiments in collaboration with other groups. As structural variant discovery is not accessible from current linear reference genomes, we aim to achieve this through multi-assembly graphs using long, accurate reads (PacBio Revio) from selected animals of different breeds segregating for a Mendelian trait (OMIA:001061-9925) in three different livestock species.

We offer an attractive academic environment, opportunities for academic career development, and a competitive salary based on the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) scheme.

For informal enquiries, please contact Cord Drögemüller.

Please send your letter of application together with a statement of motivation, CV, copies of relevant diplomas and contact details of one or two referees (reference letters are not required at this stage) in a single pdf file to: cord.droegemueller@unibe.ch.
The closing date for the application is 29 February 2024. The position will start in May 2024 or at your earliest convenience. Please state your preferred and earliest possible starting date in your application letter.
